What You Can Expect...
There are a lot of variables to consider when determining what to expect when charged with a minor traffic offense. Many jurisdictions will drop or reduce minor traffic charges if you takes steps to cure the violation (like in the case of expired inspection sticker, expired license, or no liability insurance), or if you attend one of the many driver improvement classes offered around the state.
Our Goal...
Our goal in defending you is to get you the fairest result possible under the law. If you are guilty of the offense, we will attempt to minimize any possible consequences. If you are not guilty of the offense, then we may recommend that we try the case. First, we will order your driving record from Raleigh to determine whether or not you will be eligible for any breaks. At your first court date, we will appear on your behalf (you normally will not have to be present), and talk to the Assistant District Attorney handling the case to determine if the State is willing to offer any leniency. It may be necessary to have your case continued in order to provide you with time to comply with any State offer. If you have a relatively clean driving record, the State may be willing to reduce the charge to a non-moving violation which carries no Driver's License or Insurance points.
The Punishments...
If you are convicted of the original or a reduced charge, you may be assessed a small fine and you will be ordered to pay court cost. Court cost is currently $86. Most jurisdictions offer you time to pay any fine and court cost. You can expect to have between 20-30 days to pay. After the disposition of your charge, my office will send you a letter letting you now the outcome of the case, any fine/cost owed, and where you should pay the fine/cost.

A lawyer will know what the State is willing to offer and be able to get you the best possible result. A lawyer will also be able to appear for you in most cases, which will save you time and missed work. In many cases, you will not even have to set foot in court, you can simply mail in any fine/cost after the lawyer has finished the case.
The Costs...
My office currently charges $100 to handle most minor traffic offenses. This cost includes the State fee to obtain your driving record. In most cases, it will not be necessary to have a face to face consultation. Simply mail in the $100 fee and a copy of your citation. We will do the rest. As mentioned above, when your case is disposed of, we will mail you a letter and notify you of any fine/cost, which you may owe to the court.
